All cats and dogs 4 months of age and older, living in the City of Alameda, are required to be licensed. To purchase a license you must show a current rabies vaccination certificate. The first rabies shot is good for one year; therefore, you may only purchase a license for one year. Every rabies shot thereafter is good for three years, whereupon you may purchase a one; two or three year license.
Alameda gives a discount on licenses if the pet is spayed or
neutered. Senior citizens, 62 years of age or older also qualify for a discount. If your income is at the very-low income level as outlined by the Federal Department of Housing & Urban Development for the Oakland area, you may qualify for a free license. The Animal Shelter does not take credit cards or debit cards so please bring either CASH or CHECKS ONLY.

The law requires you to license your pet thirty days after taking up residency in the City of Alameda and/or once your pet is four months of age.
A $10.00 late fee may be assessed if you do not license your pet in that time period or if you do not renew your pet license after a 45-day grace period has elapsed.
The fee to obtain a duplicate tag is $5.00.
