Licensing
spacer All cats and dogs 4 months of age and older, living in the City of Alameda, are required to be licensed. To purchase a license you must show a current rabies vaccination certificate. The first rabies shot is good for one year; therefore, you may only purchase a license for one year. Every rabies shot thereafter is good for three years, whereupon you may purchase a one; two or three year license. Example of a Dog License

Alameda gives a discount on licenses if the pet is spayed or neutered. Senior citizens, 62 years of age or older also qualify for a discount. If your income is at the very-low income level as outlined by the Federal Department of Housing & Urban Development for the Oakland area, you may qualify for a free license. The Animal Shelter does not take credit cards or debit cards so please bring either CASH or CHECKS ONLY.
