Library Support Groups:
The Alameda Free Library receives support
from three citizen groups that provide volunteer services, fund raising activities, and political advocacy.
Friends of the Alameda Free Library
Friends
of the Alameda Free Library
The Friends of the Alameda Free Library was
established in 1973 with a twofold purpose:
1. to increase public awareness of the library as an essential part of the community's educational and cultural facilities; and
2. to support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities. The Friends sponsor a variety of activities including book sales, children's programs, and author nights.
Membership in the Friends is open to the public and a variety of membership categories are available, starting at $5 per year.
The Friends of the Library also manage the operation of "Dewey's Friends Cafe" on the first floor in the Main Library. Open 6 days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Dewey's is an entirely volunteer run cafe with proceeds benefiting the library.
Also located in the Dewey's Cafe space is a Used Book Sale wall. The Friends book sale volunteers stock the wall with donated books with a "on your honor" pay system. The books for sale are constantly changing, so visit often, buy frequently, and drop your money in the box!
For additional information about the Friends, contact Friends of the Library President: Kris Matarrese.

Alameda Free Library Foundation
Alameda Free Library Foundation
The Alameda Free Library Foundation was founded in 1998 and is dedicated to establishing strong, private, on-going financial support for the library so that the library has sufficient funds for programs, materials, and equipment to meet the needs of our community.
Since the passage of the state and local bond issues, the Alameda Free Library Foundation has sponsored several major fundraising events, conducted annual fundraising solicitations by mail, and received a large bequest from the persona estate of a library supporter. The Foundation has eleven board members, the full Board and the Executive Committee meets on alternating months at the Main Library. The Foundation has made three significant gifts to the Main Library thus far. After study with the Metropolitan Group, a respected fundraising consultant firm with a good track record with libraries, the Foundation has begun a major fund drive named “Campaign for a Great Library”. The goal is $600,000 to be raised in the year prior to the opening of the new Main Library, which opened on November 2, 2006.
The City Council has adopted a naming policy for designated areas in the new Main Library and recommends that naming gifts be made through the Foundation. Please consult the Donor Recognition and Named Gifts Policy (pdf) for the donor categories and naming opportunities at each level. For general information about the fund drive consult the Campaign for a Great Library (pdf). To contact the Foundation or to donate a gift at any level, please download and print the Donation Form (pdf); or contact Foundation President Luzanne Engh for more information. You may also leave a message for the Library Foundation at 510-464-1099 and a Foundation Board Member will return your call as soon as possible.
Library Board of Trustees
The Library Board of Trustees, a group of
five volunteer citizens appointed by the Mayor, may serve up to two four-year terms. Trustees act as stewards for the community's library and advise the City Council on matters pertaining to the library. Library Board trustees meet once each month at the Main Library in the Administrative Conference Room with the Library Director; all meetings are open to the public.
