WAM: A Huge Success!
Alameda Reads’ second annual Walk A Mile for Literacy (WAM) on Saturday, September 19th was a great success! Over 200 volunteers and walkers came out to support the library’s adult literacy program and to learn more about literacy issues in our community. The event raised over $3000, all of which will go towards new materials, classes, and computer programs for our adult learners.
Alameda Reads would like to thank everyone who volunteered at the event, participated in the walk, or made a donation. We would also like to thank all of the local businesses who donated food, prizes, and space for the event. WAM could not have been such a success without all of your help! Alameda Reads would like to extend a special thank you to the Friends of the Alameda Free Library for their support and generosity.

News You Can Use Writing Class
Alameda Reads is another service of the Alameda Free Library. It began in January 1985 (as the Alameda Adult Literacy Program) with state grant money provided by the California Library Services Act. It was established to meet a community need—helping the estimated 5,000 adults in Alameda with low reading and writing skills to become more literate. Since 1990, the Literacy Program has been funded primarily through the City of Alameda Free Library. Money is also received from state and local grants, and donations.
The responsibility to achieve the goal of literacy must be shared by all of us.
