Cross Section Designs Chosen
On November 1st the Public Works Department held a public meeting whereby various 'on and off' street bikeway improvement alternatives on Fernside Boulevard between San Jose Avenue and Otis Drive were reviewed and discussed. Additional comments were received through the Internet in December.
The project is to improve bikeways from the Bay Farm Island Bike Bridge connection along the east side of Fernside Boulevard from the Aeolian Yacht Club to San Jose Avenue. The project is funded through the State Bicycle Transportation Account and Measure B Funds, with construction scheduled to start in the summer of 2008.
The Public Works Department has completed their evaluation and has chosen a cross section that best (a) reflects the needs of the community, (b) is within the project budget, (c) meets the scope of work described in the grant, (d) can be constructed given site constraints, and (e) meets other non-City agency and utility requirements.
Specific Elements of the Project
- Retains the existing curb, gutter, sidewalk, landscaping and trees along the east side of Fernside Boulevard from Lincoln Middle School to the Aeolian Yacht Club
- Removes the existing northbound right turn lane from Fernside Boulevard to Washington Court
- Maintains the existing provision of on-street parking along both the east and west sides of Fernside, between Washington Street and Lincoln Middle School
- Construction of landscape strip islands to separate the new bikeway and existing northbound vehicle travel lane
- Relocation of the existing center median westerly between San Jose Avenue and Washington Street
- Retains existing on-street bike lanes
