Public Meeting to Provide a Background and Review of Proposed Actions to Control Invasive Cordgrass (Spartina spp.) along the Alameda Shoreline
The City of Alameda Public Works Department, in conjunction with the California State Coastal Conservancy (Conservancy)’s Invasive Spartina Project and the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD), will be holding a public meeting to provide the public an opportunity to learn about the second year of a three-year program to control invasive Spartina cordgrass infestations along multiple stretches of the Alameda shoreline on:
Wednesday, July 19, 2006
6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
City Hall
2263 Santa Clara Avenue, Room 360
Alameda, CA 94501
The spread of the non-native Spartina cordgrass in tidal mudflats and wetlands has been a topic of concern in the San Francisco Bay region since the early 1970’s. Spartina infestations exist along the Alameda eastern shoreline, the San Leandro Channel on both the Alameda and Bay Farm Island shorelines, the shorelines and in the shallow near-shore waters of the Elsie Roemer Bird Sanctuary and in pockets along the Alameda shoreline of the Inner Harbor, Tidal Channel and behind Paden School near Ballena Bay.
Control of the spread of the non-native Spartina would serve to minimize the potential for Spartina-caused local flooding events, encroachment in shallow shoreline areas such as at marinas and residential boat docks, and impacts to local, native shoreline habitat. Control efforts could be initiated along the Alameda shoreline as early as September 2006.
The purpose of this public review of the proposed Spartina control and partnership efforts is to provide information to the public, to meet the needs of the community and the City’s goals. The public is also referred to the Invasive Spartina Project website at http://www.spartina.org/.
