Bicycle Master Plan

Alameda offers an ideal environment for bicycling, either as a way to get around town or as a form of recreation. The City's business districts and recreation areas are within easy reach of every neighborhood in Alameda, and the mild temperatures, low rainfall, and flat topography make bicycling a practical transportation option year-round. And it's a pleasurable way to get around, as many of the City's streets feature magnificent Victorian-style homes and beautiful tree canopy, while the shoreline paths offer breathtaking views of the San Francisco skyline and the bay.

Developing a bicycle system that is attractive and inviting is a key element in preserving Alameda as a city where people want to live, work, and visit. Through the Bicycle Plan Update, a prioritized list of projects and programs will be developed to enhance the City's bicycle network. This is an especially critical time for this type of work in Alameda, as the proposed redevelopment at Alameda Point, the Northern Waterfront, and other areas offers the City a unique opportunity to plan for bicycle access in the early stages of these projects.

The City Council initially approved the Bicycle Master Plan in 1999, and the Plan's bicycle facilities map was later incorporated into the City's General Plan. The current effort will be based on the adopted Plan, but will update the Plan where necessary. Below are links to the 1999 Bicycle Master Plan.
